Julie, amazing capture. I love these birds, and when they display their feathers, they are so elegant - great capture. f/l

Julie Adair replied:

Thank you Cindy. Yes, they are amazing and stunning especially this time of year. I sit and watch them for hours.

What a great day of shooting! Beautiful capture, Julie! Never seen that fuzziness around the bill before. Any idea what caused that?

Julie Adair replied:

Thank you and it sure was. The fuzziness is from where the bird was displaying mating behavior. They fluff up by shaking their heads and throwing their plumes up. The other image of the same bird titled Looking For Love shows that behavior which is when they fluff themselves up. This is what I think anyway after watching these birds for so long. Also they often rub their beaks against wood to sharpen and clean them which causes some fluffing as well.
